The album title hangs heavy throughout the duration of the songs themselves, a weight around the neck of its creators. Inspired by a tumultuous time for vocalist Seb Alvarez, the album is an uncomfortable listen as he grapples with then-undiagnosed bi-polar and unchecked addiction issues. Whilst the themes of shame, deception and trauma are not new to meth., they have previously been dressed up with a fictional veneer. This time around, Alvarez lays his vulnerabilities bare, offering up the darkest parts of himself.The oppressive burden of shame, galvanised by behaviours rooted in addiction and mental illness seeps into the anxiety-inducing atmosphere of the album. Alvarez chronicles the differing types of shame and rock bottom feelings from Catholic guilt instilled in him from a young age, through to the more recent deceptions of concealing the effects of alcoholism. As he details his constant internal battles and downward spirals, everything is channelled into the creative process. The result is stark, unyielding and raw.For the first time, the band wrote as a unit, indicating a shift in focus. Alvarez focussed on the lyrical and thematic elements of the album and created more room for his bandmates to thrive. The ominous sound of SHAME is littered with experimental flourishes, as meth. lean into noise rock and metal simultaneously. There is an industrial bleakness to the album that propels it along, at some points as though through gritted teeth. Operating under a remit that included avoiding a reliance on riffs, meth. instead let rhythm - specifically their drums - carry the weight and forward motion of their compositions. Recorded in winter 2022-23 by Zack Farrer at Rose Raft in New Douglas, IL, the album was later mixed and mastered by Colin Marston.

Today, January 19th, Brooklyn’s Maia Friedman is delighted to announce her debut solo album, Under The New Light, out on Last Gang Records, March 11, 2022. After the critical acclaim of the first single “Where The Rocks Are” from the likes of Rolling Stone and NPR All Songs Considered, Maia has just released the second single “First To Love,” a mellifluous tune about the emotional wonders of being human.
As an ode to the shifting landscape of our own lives, Friedman began Under the New Light four years ago, while teaching music and performing in multiple New York bands. “Collaborating gives me the juice,” she says, laughing. In 2018 Friedman was asked to join Dirty Projectors and a heavy schedule of touring followed. She sang and co-wrote the lyrics for the first of their 5 EPs, released last year, most notably for the soothing earworm “Overlord.” Meanwhile, Friedman also formed Coco, which began as a collaborative recording project with Oliver Hill (Dustrider, Pavo Pavo) and Dan Molad(Lucius, Chimney) and they released music anonymously until the announce of their 2021 self-titled debut.
Friedman’s voice lends a unique quality of warm comfort that permeates all her collaborations, but Under the New Light presents her full intention. Her role is that of the wounded healer, one who has gained wisdom through darkness and grief.
The album plays like a fulfilled journey, and though Friedman is still somewhere in the middle of her own, on Under the New Light her vision is fully formed. On the bright closer “A Sleep in the Garden,” she nods, for better or worse, toward the future: “I won’t look away / when you show me more.”

From the first moments of Goodbye Long Winter Shadow, layers of strings, woodwinds, acoustic guitar and the warm anchoring voice of Maia Friedman blossom as if to say “you are here.” The lush arrangements and sage lyricism are an enveloping statement of intent. They carry the devotion to nature Friedman fostered growing up in California’s Sierra Nevada with a new mother’s exploration of time and transformation. Friedman spent months developing the language of the album, pursuing the music she envisioned with characteristic patience. Produced with Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Florist) and Oliver Hill (Magdalena Bay, Helado Negro), the result is chamber pop abounding with melodic intimacy, a world where instruments bob and weave around the heart-stopping clarity of Friedman’s voice.
Though 2022’s acclaimed debut Under the New Light was the first album under her name, the California-born, New York-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has honed her sound for years as a member of both Dirty Projectors and Coco, the shared project of Friedman, Hill and Dan Molad. Where her debut was built from collaborative improvisation, Goodbye Long Winter Shadow is a collection of songs in the classic sense. Intimate instrumentals punctuate its running time and emphasize the sonic palette of the orchestral arrangements. This latest offering is a mesmerizing exploration into the sounds of the yin and yang as we live it. Inspired lyrically by Steinbeckian themes, Desha touches on what it means to be human: the nature of reality, man’s propensity for greed, and the power of love in a forever uncertain world. The consummate Low Hum bass synth tone and ripping riffs on opening track “Meet Me In The Sky” are instant welcome-to-the-show earworms.
"Only If You Say So" winds through multiple hairpin curves with its dark, driving arpeggiator ending blissfully in an ethereal wall of sound, while the writhing guitar and haunting vocals on “Sultry” keep you sleeping with one eye open. British Columbia-based band Loving (multi-instrumentalists/songwriters Jesse Henderson and David Parry) have announced their sophomore album Any Light will be released on February 9th, 2024, via Last Gang Records/MNRK. The 10-song LP is a sonic leap from their 2020 debut LP, If I Am Only My Thoughts, and presents their most powerful and emotionally affecting songs to date.
On Any Light, Loving share a batch of songs born from moments of serendipitous inspiration: a spontaneously composed poem, a long-forgotten voice memo, an uncannily pertinent book unearthed in their studio space. Henderson and Parry brought these songs to life by surrendering to a prolonged process of free-flowing experimentation, often dreaming up several entirely distinct iterations of a track before deciding on a final version.
Through all that unhurried exploration, Loving arrived at a body of work that invites a similar sense of charmed receptivity, even as its songs examine such complex matters as romantic love, depression, existential uncertainty, and the psychic consequences of living in an increasingly digitized world.
“When I looked at all of these songs together, I realized that the concept of light was threaded throughout the album,” explains Henderson, who serves as Loving’s vocalist and lyricist. “For me light signifies awareness or insight, which ties into how many of these songs document a shift in perspective.”
Any Light took shape at Risque Disque studio on Vancouver Island, with Loving greatly expanding their musical vocabulary and repertoire. The album encompasses a far more elaborate sound than its predecessor, layering its lush arrangements with trumpet, timpani, vibraphone, strings, and organ—all new territory for the band. Despite diverging from the finespun indie-folk of their past work, Loving imbue every song with the poetic introspection first shown on their 2016 debut EP, as well as the disarmingly warm presence they’ve brought to stages around the world.
Although Henderson and Parry handled most of Any Light’s instrumentation on their own—with Henderson playing piano, Wurlitzer, guitar, and organ and Parry’s contributions including guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and additional keys —Loving also shaped the album’s richly detailed tracks with the help of several musician-friends, including singer/songwriter Evan Cheadle on guitar, multi-instrumentalist Colin Nealis on strings, and Keenan Mittag-Degala on percussion.

Loving's intimate, lo-fi psychedelic folk songs inspire a sense of ease while being deceptively intricate. The songs offer a space to ruminate on life's uncertainties and acknowledge the often strange journey of being alive.
With lyrics written by both Jesse and Lucas, the lush, homespun collection of songs were recorded to tape, mixed, and mastered by David in his self-described “cold, dismal” basement studio in Victoria. In contrast, these songs are balmy and inviting, a series of open-ended questions that circle the uncertainties of existence.
“There isn't a single narrative driving this album, but we do linger on some basic human problems: confusion in the face of a desire for self-knowledge and belonging, a struggle for meaning that is circular and sometimes seemingly endless," Jesse says. On If I Am Only My Thoughts, those looming questions go largely unanswered. They are fodder for further contemplation, delivered with a peaceful naturalism in the vein of contemporaries like Bedouine and Kevin Morby.

Louis Prince is the moniker of Orange County, CA artist Jake McMullen, and serves as the new platform for his debut record, Thirteen.
Influenced by 50’s and 60’s Jazz, French New Wave cinema and the stream-of- consciousness literary styles of Jack Kerouac and Joseph Conrad, Thirteen feels more like a product of the Beat Generation mid-century Greenwich Village than of Music City. The Southern roots are there too in the neo-folk spirit of later Bob Dylan and the existential exploration of generational malaise in Robert Altman’s film, “Nashville” or Walker Percy’s Southern Gothic classic, “The Moviegoer.”

Mysterium Tremendum is the record Olson and Evans have wanted to make since the band’s inception. It’s easily Lord Dying’s most musically diverse album, but one that could only be created following the band’s jackhammer 2013 debut Summon the Faithless, and 2015’s brooding Poisoned Altars. “It’s more along the lines of what we wanted to do early on,” says Evans.
