Virginia Beach, VA epic death metal duo FORETOKEN have returned and are poised to leave a grandiose mark on 2023 with their sophomore full-length, Triumphs, set for release via Prosthetic Records on March 17. Following their 2020 debut long player, Ruin, FORETOKEN™s latest album sees the group expand upon their foundations of meticulously lofty soundscapes, mythological narratives, and elaborate musicianship. Utilizing traditional narratives of myths, legends, and folklore from a wide range of Western and Middle Eastern origins, Triumphs examines the ignored collateral damage of the cost of victory through these established mythos. Taking musical inspiration from melodic and tech death metal, as well as power, folk and black metal, Foretoken™s core sound on Triumphs is bolstered by subtle and captivating use of traditionally Scandinavian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern instruments for atmospheric depth within the album™s 51 minute runtime. Triumphs was penned throughout 2021 by both Steve Redmond (guitar and orchestration) and Dan Cooley (vocals), with the pair settling on eight original compositions and a cover of Naglfar™s I Am Vengeance. Grossmann then commenced drum tracking at his own studio, Mordor Sounds, with guitars recorded by Redmond himself and vocals captured at Trepan Studios by Tony Petrocelly, before mixing and mastering duties were placed in the accomplished hands of Jacob Hansen (Arch Enemy, Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Black Dahlia Murder, and more) at Hansen Studios. Visually tied together by portrait artist Tomas Honz™s detailed cover painting, depicting a protagonist's journey in the aftermath of battle, Triumphs aesthetic component is a symbolic embodiment of the duo™s enduring fascination with historial consequence via a folkloric lens. Providence, RI™s Dreamwell cut their teeth for many years before they were able to craft their debut full length album Modern Grotesque, self-released in 2021. The recruitment of vocalist K.Z. Staska, filling out their third and final lineup, in 2019 set the creation of their first album in motion. Writing Modern Grotesque was a messy, imperfect process bloated with stumbling points and road blocks, but would prove to be an important learning experience for the band. It pushed each of them to the limits of their writing capabilities, and helped them discover their own style. Â Â Â If Modern Grotesque was the album that turned Dreamwell into a powerful force, their sophomore album In My Saddest Dreams, I Am Beside You is that force pushing its full weight for the first time. With this being their first time intending to actually write a full album, and being able to sit together and start it from scratch, the band was more locked in and in tune with one another than ever. That sense of unity and intentionality permeates every aspect of this album, from the bold songwriting to the cohesiveness of the album™s lyrical themes and ideas. It further pushes the boundaries of what can be considered screamo, borrowing sounds and aesthetics from everything ranging from 90s metalcore to the most morose of doom. The dark and chaotic nature of the album backs up the record™s themes. In My Saddest Dreams, I Am Beside You is an exploration of the hardships of navigating interpersonal relationships and through the static of Borderline Personality Disorder. Its loose narrative structure follows a narrator character who finds himself trapped in a series of unending waking nightmares, full hallucinations distorting reality around him and forcing him to try and deal with his fears, mental health, and relationships with other people in confusing and horrifying new ways as he struggles to tell the difference between reality and distortion.
Domination Campaign was started in Hobart Tasmania in late 2019 by Psycroptic vocalist Jason Peppiatt as a solo studio project. Jason began work in Crawlspace studios in December 2019 with fellow Psycroptic band mate and studio engineer Joe Haley. Once recording began Joe was recruited to also play drums on the album and the duo had their sights set on recording an over the top, heavy, straight down the line, crushing old school death metal album. Nothing fancy or technical just big simple heavy riffs and massive mid paced drum beats. Lyrical topics are loosely based on events of various wars in history. Their debut album ˜Onward to glory™ was completed in July 2020 with all recording, mixing and mastering done by Joe Haley and album art done by Jason Peppiatt
