FROM SHEPARD FAIREYThis "Tear Flame" print is fairly self-explanatory, but I'll share my thoughts. Our planet Earth is often called "Mother Earth" for reasons that seem obvious to me. Mothers are often the primary caregivers for children, and their beautiful love and nurturing are essential for a good life. This is not an endorsement of patriarchy but an acknowledgment of the disproportionate expectations for mothers. Props to all the dads who put in a ton of co-parenting work, but this print is more about the "Mother Earth" metaphor. When I was a kid, I was rebellious and defiant (and still am), and it didn't really phase me when my parents yelled at me. However, when something I did brought my mom to tears, I felt real guilt. I knew my mom cared deeply and was wounded if she cried. We are wounding our collective Mother Earth, and the tears are obvious. This is a collective problem, even though some people and regions are more vulnerable than others in the short term. Eventually, it will compromise life for us all. To paraphrase Dr. Dre, "When you dis your mother, you dis yourself"! – Shepard

FROM SHEPARD FAIREYThis "Bliss at the Cliff's Edge" image is my modern take on the 19th-century romantic landscape featuring sunbathers enjoying the dramatic oceanside setting. The Industrial Revolution and the discovery of oil as a fuel source created convenient advances that left more leisure time for the public to enjoy. At the time, these advances seemed to have no downside but we now have an overwhelming scientific consensus that the pollution and carbon emissions from oil and gas are dramatically harming and heating the planet and contributing to more extreme weather. We are at the cliff's edge when it comes to preventing the most catastrophic damage to the planet. The technology exists, the only thing missing is the will of the people to put the future of the planet and the lives of our kids before convenience and profit. From MattelIntersections play a role in roads, in media, and in memory. The Ford Mustang drives across them all, as an avatar of the car that challenged the streets of San Francisco in the film Bullitt. That movie’s prop masters collaborated with Daniel Arsham on a 1:1 resin sculpture, and we collaborated with him on a 1:64 Silkstone edition. All of them evoke the experience of the thrilling cinematic chase – though our recollections, like the car presented here, may erode over time.
