Books by splitShops Mamas: The Beauty of Motherhood in French and English - Paperback
by Ready Set Go Books (Author), Beth Crow (Contribution by), Jacqueline Stewart (Illustrator)Vibrant watercolor illustrations capture the beauty and color of Mamas' daily routines in this touching tribute to mothers in Ethiopia and beyond. Most of the illustrations were inspired by photographs taken in the Harari region of Ethiopia. The historic walled city of Harar itself is located in the eastern part of Ethiopia and sits atop a hill. In 2006 Harar was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often referred to as the fourth holy city of Islam. Also deemed the city of saints, Christian and Muslim families have lived peacefully side by side in the city for centuries. Women play many important roles in Harari culture and enjoy robust social lives built around friendship and kinship. Harari women work inside and outside of their homes as farmers, merchants and weavers in addition to traditional household roles. Women also work in labor and service, education and medicine. Simple bilingual text in French and English supports emerging readers with side by side text. Sales of this book support Open Hearts Big Dreams, a nonprofit devoted to increasing literacy in Ethiopia. Ready Set Go Books, an Open Hearts Big Dreams Project, is focused on increasing the literacy rate in Ethiopia through giving readers books with stories in their heart languages, full of colorful illustrations with Ethiopian settings and details. Profits from book sales are used to create, print, and distribute more Ready Set Go Books to kids in Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous country. Ethiopia's population is 44% children, ages 0-14 (43 million out of 97 million total). Only 5.5% of children attend pre-school or kindergarten, and the adult literacy rate is 49%. Our books are based on wise Ethiopian sayings that often rhyme in Amharic. If an adult says the first half, many children can chant the second half. Sometimes the meaning of these sayings is clear. Sometimes it has to be puzzled out and argued over. But sayings and idioms and proverbs help people express truths and beliefs in unusual ways. Since late 2017, OHBD has published over 100 unique #ReadySetGo dual language titles in four Ethiopian languages plus English and has plans to publish another 100 titles and add more languages in the coming years. Books by splitShops Demoted Planet - Paperback
by Katherine Fallon (Author)Mournful and flawless, bereaved and elegant, these breathtaking poems bend low like five widowed giraffes teaching themselves how to go under the limbo bar of grief for the first time. They take the readers into the impeccable sound that a semi makes when it crushes five female nursing students or to a place where you can't ever gaze at the cocktail shrimp or the refrigerator and its forehead the same way. These poems have a way of making you want to wear jeans again after a decade spent with a type of lingerie called khakis.- Vi Khi Nao, judge of the Charlotte Mew Prize We often talk about how our experiences-particularly the difficult ones-leave scars that only grow larger with time, like damage wrought to the trunk of a growing tree. But the poems of Demoted Planet do what I've come to expect from all the poetry of Katherine Fallon: through fantastic imagery, courage, and a touch of humor, they remind us that even the worst of our experiences can be reshaped into something better. -Michael Meyerhofer, author of Ragged Eden With quiet reverence and raw vulnerability, Demoted Planet traces the connective tissue between the before and after of a parent's harrowing illness and passing, revealing how a child, over time, is taught to cope. Katherine Fallon explores a father's complex relationships with his family, his life's work, and the untouchable worlds beyond the realm of his lived experience. These elegiac poems brim over with the aching, often dissonant gaps of memory between the person who raises us and the fragile being they become; the man behind the camera and his ailing body on display.-Nicole Steinberg, author of Glass Actress Number of Pages: 46 Dimensions: 0.1 x 9 x 6 IN Publication Date: January 04, 2021

by Tara Copp (Author), Robert L. Rogers (Author)For a century, the student journalists at "The Daily Texan" have reported and commented on The University of Texas. From Prohibition to the sexual revolution, from Vietnam peace protests to the Tower massacre, from horse-drawn buggies to the Internet, these students have covered it all. Now, for the first time, the stories behind what was printed are revealed. In this behind-the-scenes account, scandal, censorship, and corruption surface at the same time that unheralded stories of judgment, courage, and integrity come to light. From fighting the Board of Regents to conspiring with the UT president against the Texas governor, "Daily Texan" editors have been intimately involved in the life of the Forty Acres. They have had to face major issues, such as integration, freedom of the press, war protest, and affirmative action. But neither has their coverage ignored other, less significant aspects of campus life, including panty raids, beauty pageants, and streaking. Join two former editors as they explore the fascinating history of a newspaper that has covered - and sometimes influenced - The University of Texas. Robert L. Rogers was "Daily Texan" editor from 1995 to 1996. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The University of Texas in 1996, majoring in Plan II, history, and government. In 1999 he graduated from the Harvard Law School and now practices law. Tara Copp was "Daily Texan" editor from 1996 to 1997. She graduated from Plan II in 1997 and is now a journalist. Books by splitShops On Purpose Before Twenty - Paperback
by Adam Cox (Author)For educators and general readers, this important, lively and readable book tells a different story of youth. Clinical psychologist Adam Cox - author of Boys of Few Words and No Mind Left Behind - draws upon clinical practice and groundbreaking global research to offer a compelling new narrative about childhood priorities, adolescent angst and the work of schools. He declares these topics to be worthy of serious consideration, and children as fascinating and complex as any other age group with respect to their attitudes and understanding of what a good and purposeful life implies. Current social and economic trends reflect a time of deep transition in our personal values, career trajectories, and social imperatives. Young people's lives are radically shifting in response to new technologies, politics, and changing environmental realities. Cox asserts it is critical to re-examine basic questions - What is living well? Why do we work? How do we find meaning and purpose in vocation? How do we raise and teach children to be effective citizens? What does best-selling literature tell us about how to raise kids? Clearheaded, provocative, and compassionate, On Purpose Before Twenty presents a series of readable, practical essays: The Purpose of Work, Sovereign Minds, The Case for Boredom, On Monstrous Children, Being Harry Potter, and School as Wisdom Culture. It offers a roadmap for primary and secondary schools seeking to provide an education relevant to the concerns and priorities of youth. The book asks what are schools for, and discusses whether ADHD is the new normal. Most important, the book addresses how the next generation is radically different in terms of motivation, communication, and vocational perspectives. Cox suggests that knowing one's purpose is as important as a good education and loving parents. His book echoes a fundamental belief that our serious regard for the potential of young people makes the world a more welcoming place for them. It is as much an essential form of stewardship as protecting forests, and creatures living on the brink of extinction.
