  • Braniff Playing Cards

Art of Play Braniff Playing Cards

Braniff Airways took flight as a visionary bond between two brothers who joined forces to create one of the world's leading airlines. From its beginnings in Oklahoma City in 1927, Braniff grew into a multinational corporation flying to more than 89 destinations around the globe. In 1965, Braniff introduced “The End of the Plain Plane” advertising campaign, an ambitious creative transformation that forever reshaped the airline industry. Alexander Girard, a luminary of graphic design, was enlisted to reimagine the various aspects of air travel and shape every moment flying on Braniff into a “lively performance.” He introduced vibrant colors, lush fabrics, and mid-century modern design to 17,542 touchpoints along the Braniff International travel journey - from the airplane livery to blankets to furniture to the brand identity. Braniff became the tastemaker for international travel. These playing cards harken back to that jet-set era and celebrate Braniff’s enduring influence on the world of art, fashion, design and travel.

  • Calder Playing Cards

Art of Play Calder Playing Cards

One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Alexander Calder (1898–1976) disrupted traditional boundaries in art with his suspended abstract mobiles and his monumental stabiles. Removing sculpture from the pedestal, he invited viewers to experience his art directly, a concept that extends to his performative pieces, furniture design, jewelry, and even his paintings. Calder Playing Cards are based on a set of vivid gouache paintings from the 1970s known as the Card Player series. Many of the cards are direct reproductions from those paintings, with the striped back also pulled from them. All letters and numbers are in Calder’s own handwriting. Since court cards were not included in the original images, the faces for the Jack, King, and Queen were extracted from another series of gouaches that Calder painted around the same period. Every detail of this deck was faithfully reproduced to celebrate the enduring legacy of Calder, the iconic master of innovation in art.

Here it signifies their boundless creative energy—an explosion of light reaching for the outer limits of design's true purpose. The unique numbering system on the faces of the cards enables acts of cardistry to function as subtle homages to the Eameses' classic film “Powers of Ten." The court cards honor the natural majesty they found in elemental geometric shapes. Mathematics, form, and the critical role of constraints in design are threads woven throughout the Eameses' life and work. Eames Playing Cards come in a letterpress-printed tuck case printed on sustainable paper using vegetable-based dyes. Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Ray Bradbury have all sought out William Stout for his singular expertise in bringing dinosaurs to life. A custom back design playfully references the traditional “rider back” aesthetic and 54 different dinosaurs (some peeking out from diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs) were drawn especially for the faces of these cards. • Eames "Hang-It-All" Playing Cards

Art of Play Eames "Hang-It-All" Playing Cards

    17 in stock

Charles and Ray Eames brought a sense of playfulness to midcentury design, imbuing everyday objects with unexpected joy. Our second edition of Eames Playing Cards embraces this approach with a celebration of their iconic Hang-It-All wall rack. The first thing you’ll notice is the jubilant color palette of the early 1950s. The visual motif is a clear homage to the stick and ball components of the original design. However, in adapting the Hang-It-All to a new form, we made a surprising discovery. When traditional playing card symbols are replaced with numerals, the result is more logical and visually cohesive. So, inspired by the rebellious spirit Ray and Charles were famous for, we decided to ditch the aristocracy entirely and adopt a more minimalist approach. You will not find any Kings or Queens in this deck; the cards are simply numbered 1-13, a subtle but gently revolutionary gesture that we’ve never attempted before. But now, we can’t help wondering why this clarity eluded us for so long. Every time we shuffle the pack and juggle the colorful balls, we’re reminded of the Eames’ enthusiasm to defy the gravity of expectations and embrace a spirit of exploration. Eames Playing Cards come packaged in a letterpress printed box reminiscent of the home that Charles and Ray designed and built in Los Angeles, California. Made in the USA.
